Two Picture Two Music: By the master of musical surrealism.
I'd love to think that SLIM GAILLARD plays at my local but, sadly, he's fully booked at the great niteclub in the sky. Oscar, you will remember that he spent a year or two of his latter days in London. He seemed to have accomodation above the Hare Krishna place around the corner from Soho Square and would appear - smile for the public - and glide down Oxford Street in white beret and astrakhan coat. The tallest man that ever grooved. When I saw his show he had the same blonde Gibson that T-BONE favoured. On T - who was jockey-size- it looked like a cello, but SLIM cuddled it like a ukelele.
Yes...I used to see him around Soho...You must have seen the two parts documentary the BBC made about him...There is a magnificent moment when the Mayor of Laguna, in California gives him the keys of the town and he forces the Lagunians to remove their shoes , get into the surf and sing along: "Laguna...Oorooni....Laguna ...Oreeni!!" Marvellous...And pretending to speak Spanish and starting a big speech saying NOTHING but sounds vaguely reminiscent of the spanish language...Genius! Have you heard his recording with Charlie Parker and Dizzy Gillespie?

I remember the programmes...But in a fog.
What I do remember clearly about SLIM was that he looked on the world - and treated us - as his friends.
A mí, simplemente me gusta mucho el pelado que fuma... se parece a Sarmiento.
El Turco Quique.
